Emergency & Planned Power Cuts

In Western England & South Wales, power cuts may occur due to emergency situations such as extreme weather, accidental damage to the grid, or necessary maintenance. National Grid works to restore power as quickly as possible, but in some cases, planned outages may be required for maintenance or infrastructure upgrades.

Preparing for a Power Cut

It’s important to prepare for potential power outages, especially during the colder months when storms and freezing temperatures can impact the power grid. Here are a few tips for preparation:
  • Emergency Lighting:
Keep a torch with spare batteries or a battery-powered lantern to light your home during an outage.
  • Food and Water:
Stock up on non-perishable foods and bottled water. Consider having enough supplies for several days.
  • Warm Clothing:
In winter, ensure you have warm clothing, blankets, and extra layers to stay comfortable during power interruptions.
  • Backup Medical Equipment:
If you or someone in your household relies on electrically-powered medical equipment, make sure you have a backup power source or alternative arrangements in place.

Western England and South Wales feature diverse geographical features that can impact electricity supply, especially in rural, mountainous, and coastal areas. Coastal regions are vulnerable to saltwater corrosion, while rural areas may face longer restoration times due to remoteness. The network is also susceptible to severe weather events, including storms and flooding, which can damage infrastructure. Aging infrastructure and increasing electricity demand require continuous upgrades to ensure reliability and resilience.

In February 2020, Storm Dennis caused significant disruption across South Wales and Western England, affecting over 70,000 homes. The heavy rainfall and strong winds led to widespread flooding, fallen trees, and damage to power lines, leaving many areas without electricity for up to 48 hours. National Grid Electricity Distribution worked quickly to restore power, but the storm highlighted the vulnerability of some regions to extreme weather.

In November 2021, Storm Arwen brought winds of up to 98 mph to parts of South Wales and the South West, causing widespread outages. Over 200,000 homes were affected, and some regions experienced power cuts for up to 5 days. The storm caused significant damage to power lines, and restoration efforts were complicated by fallen trees and infrastructure damage.

In October 2002, Cyclone Jeanett caused power cuts for over 300,000 homes in the South West and Wales. Some areas experienced power outages lasting up to 10 days due to the severe winds and fallen trees that damaged the electricity network.

In October 1987, The Great Storm caused extensive damage across southern England, particularly affecting the South West. The storm’s powerful winds brought down trees and power lines, causing significant outages, especially in rural areas, and leaving many without power for several days.
