After a fault occurred on the main incoming switchboard busbars, a prestigious hotel in London lost all power!
The standby generator was unable to supply the load due to the busbar fault, leaving the hotel without any power. With a high occupation and high profile guests it was essential to restore services as soon as possible.
Our Solent engineers attended and bypassed the building standby generator feed from the intake switchboard and made temporary connections into the main distribution board, allowing the building generator to supply the building and restore services.
Once the intake board was inspected, it was found to have suffered damage to the busbars and insulated busbar supports that would require delivery of replacement parts. The decision was made to mobilize a temporary hire generator package to support the hotel until the intake switchboard could be repaired.
Solent Power supplied a temporary power package featuring 3 x 500kVA synchronous silent generators with external fuel tanks, a temporary connection panel, cable sets and temporary fencing with acoustic covers to reduce noise for nearby residents.
The equipment was delivered to the hotel within 6 hours and positioned and installed the same day, with over 900M of temporary cabling ran from street level into the hotel basement.
A full switching plan was made to ensure safe isolations and minimize disruption during power transitions. Extra care was taken to make temporary covers for the cable entry points and also temporary walkways to lay over the cables and allow safe access into the hotel staff entrance.
Diesel was supplied to site to keep the hotel standby generator tank topped up, and our engineers remained on standby to monitor the generators on load.
Once the intake switchboard was repaired, the temporary power package was decommissioned and power was safely restored back onto the hotel mains supply.
