Solent Power pledges vital support to local charity Friends Fighting Cancer

As Solent Power Ltd continues to fundraise towards several charity projects in the region, we are proud to announce our support of the non-profit organisation, Friends Fighting Cancer (FFC).

With a heavy influence on “supporting through sport,” and spurred on by the stories of those in need, FFC focuses on providing money directly to families to help alleviate the financial stress caused by cancer. They also offer a grant scheme to provide financial aid to those living with cancer and their families who are dealing with the financial burden of the disease. These grants can be processed quickly, sometimes within 24 hours, ensuring timely support for those in need.

Additionally, the charity offers bereavement counselling, providing emotional and psychological assistance during times of loss. This service is available to any family member impacted by cancer, ensuring they receive the care and support they need.

Our decision to back this important charity comes at a time when cancer diagnoses are on the rise, with more than 385,000 new cancer cases reported in the UK annually. Additionally, the disease causes around 167,000 deaths each year and, although survival rates are significantly improving, the reality is that cancer will still affect every single one of us in our lifetime.

From humble beginnings…

First launched in 2008, the charity, which has raised more than £1 million for local cancer charities and people, has grown from a single charity football tournament to becoming a vital source of support for families going through one of the most challenging times in their lives.

Driven by a team of dedicated volunteers, FFC has built a strong community of participants, sponsors, and supporters who actively engage in its events and initiatives, such as its multiple football tournaments, one-off matches, countless raffles, bucket collections, walking events, boxing events, skydives, darts tournaments, and much more.

The FFC charity shop, which was first opened in 2017, provides another source of income, and acts as a base for growth and a local presence, with many local community members donating their time and resources to help create one of the best shops on Cosham high street.

They also accept monthly donations, something that Solent Power is proud to contribute to regularly.

The FFC Holiday Home

Situated in the coastal town of Selsey, Chichester, the FFC Holiday Home is a serene and relaxing getaway which offers respite for cancer-affected families. Available for up to seven days (six nights) and sleeping up to six people, the warm and inviting caravan has been a vital source of comfort for many.

It allows families to take a break from the stresses and challenges associated with cancer treatment and recovery, helping to contribute to improved emotional and mental well-being. In addition to the home, guests can enjoy a free day out to West Sands Funfair every time they stay, a kind donation and valued gesture from the owners of the funfair.

“Our relationship with Solent Power is one we truly value. Their financial support as one of our corporate partners helps us expand the charity by covering new events, sponsoring our golf days, and supporting our services,” said Raymond Ogilvie, Operations Manager at Friends Fighting Cancer.

“This backing allows us to aid families affected by cancer through our grant service, which can provide support within 24 hours of a successful application. Additionally, Solent Power’s contributions help maintain our holiday home, offering families a much-needed respite from daily struggles, and support our bereavement counselling service, which assists any family member affected by this devastating disease.”

Paul Phelps, Managing Director of Solent Power said: “We believe in the power of community and the importance of supporting those in need. We are honoured to partner with Friends Fighting Cancer and contribute to their vital work in supporting families affected by cancer. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of many.”
