Solent Power backs men’s mental health organisation United Minds Hampshire

Solent Power Ltd is proud to support United Minds Hampshire, a non-profit organisation dedicated to eliminating the stigma surrounding men’s mental health.

Our decision to back this Portsmouth-based group was driven by the alarming rise in male suicide rates, with 3728 (73.7%) of these tragic deaths being men. Additionally, statistics reveal that over 40% of men have not discussed their mental health, with 29% feeling “too embarrassed” to seek help.

Supporting United Minds

In light of these concerning figures, we’ve aligned part of our fundraising strategy to support men’s mental health causes, and believe that United Mind’s values resonate perfectly with ours.

Formed in 2021, United Minds began when a few brave men shared their struggles during a Facebook livestream event in Portsmouth. Calvin Soper and Pete Lockyer openly discussed their challenges, receiving overwhelming support from the local community.

The group offers support to those who need it most, ensuring that mental health peer-to-peer engagement is available for all. They also host regular workshops and community campaigns to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote mental health literacy, as well as offering financial assistance to those struggling to access mental health counselling.

Since its inception, United Minds has gained a positive reputation through its focus on sports and mental well-being. They have launched the charity football team United Minds FC and organised sporting events to raise funds and provide counselling and support to local men struggling with their mental health.

Last year, on 10th October 2023, we proudly sponsored the kit worn by United Minds during the World Mental Health Day football tournament at Everton Football Club, where players from various leagues and divisions across the UK competed. This partnership marked a significant step in our commitment to supporting mental health initiatives, and we were thrilled to be able to support the team on their way to victory.

What else does United Minds offer?

Keeping with the football theme, every Monday United Minds holds a football kick-about at Mountbatten 3G pitch, Alex Way, Hilsea PO2 9QA. It’s a great chance to enjoy physical activity for all skill levels from 8 pm until 9 pm, with a cost of just £5.00 for the session.

For those who prefer the sidelines to the pitch, on the first and third Tuesday night of each month, United Minds holds an open talk night in Purbrook. These talk nights are non-judgemental speaking sessions where men can come and talk about concerns and listen to how others are coping with the stresses and pressures of life.

In addition to these regular events, United Minds also organises a Men’s Talk Night and Workshop every other Wednesday at the Village Bakery and Cafe in Purbrook, starting at 6:30 pm. These workshops offer a supportive environment for men to share their experiences and receive guidance on mental health issues.

And for quizzers? They host their very own Quiz Night, usually on the first Tuesday of every month, although dates may vary. Each event is relaxed and an enjoyable way for the community to come together and support a worthy cause while having fun.
